Resources: Climate datasets
This section contains information on the various climate datasets available for use.
Historic, observed baseline data
- UKCP09 observed data (1961–1990): Gridded observed climate datasets are available for daily, monthly and annual timescales, as well as long-term averages for the 1961–1990 climate baseline period. This data can be downloaded from the Met Office website.
- CIBSE database (1984–2004): Hourly weather datasets (Design Summer Years and Test Reference Years for 14 locations) produced from the above database are available to purchase from CIBSE. Please contact Anastasia Mylona for more details.
UKCIP02 data
- UKCIP02: The UKCIP02 scenarios are based on four different IPCC SRES emissions scenarios and three future time-slices. Unlike UKCP09, these projections are not probabilistic. They were produced at a spatial resolution of 50 km rather than the 25 km resolution of the UKCP09 projections. The UKCIP02 data archive provides access to the underlying model output that support the projections of climate change described by UKCIP02.
- CIBSE customised UKCIP02 data: CIBSE in collaboration with UKCIP and ARUP has produced future hourly weather years, which is customised UKCIP02 data for use in building level simulations. It is based on the existing Design Summer Years (DSYs) and Test Reference Years (TRYs), which incorporate the UKCIP02 climate change scenarios. The above future weather years are available for 14 sites, for three timeslices (2020s 2011–2040, 2040s 2041–2070 and 2080s 2071–2100) and for four emissions scenarios (Low, Medium-Low, Medium- High and High). In order to get access to this data you must download and complete the licence agreement. The form needs to be read and signed by the PI of the research project and a signed copy must be posted to Anastasia Mylona at CIBSE (222 Balham High Road, London, SW12 9BS) or emailed to Anastasia Mylona.
UKCP09 data
- UKCP09, released in June 2009, is the fifth generation of climate information for the UK, and is the most comprehensive package produced to date. These projections represent the current science, and are probabilistic in nature allowing users to assess the associated range of uncertainty. The UKCP09 website is a comprehensive guide to the data available and provides targeted, multi-level information to support and explain terms and concepts used in the delivery of UKCP09. The data itself can be accessed via the UKCP09 User Interface.
UKCP09 Batch data
- Following the launch of UKCP09 it became evident that there was a user requirement to access large amounts of the probabilistic sampled data (rather than plots or the CDF version of the data). In response to this requirement, an additional service within the User Interface that allows users to access a CSV version of the entire sampled data archive has been released.
Wind data
- Wind data is not available as part of UKCP09. However, it is available via the 11-member RCM which is a by-product of UKCP09. The 11 ensemble members are available through the Climate Impacts LINK project and are not available via the UKCP09 user interface. The RCM data is not as readily accessible as the UKCP09 information and does not have a similar level of user support accompanying it. On the other hand it has several advantages, such as being continuous from 1950-2099 and coherent from square to square. It is now available in CF-NetCDF and CSV format.
